Governor Pritzker Signs South Suburban Airport Bill

Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday, July 28, 2023 signed HB 2531 into law. The bill requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to start the prequalification process for entering public-private agreements established in the South Suburban Airport Act.

If private sector proposals come through and the project moves forward, the cargo airport will be built at Bult Field between Monee and Beecher.

U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson, whose district includes Homewood and Flossmoor, issued a statement in response to the bill signing.

“I am thankful for Governor Pritzker’s leadership in recognizing the importance of this airport for the future of the Southland, and for the State of Illinois,” she said. “A cargo airport in the South Suburbs will bring in a host of new economic activity, benefiting historically underinvested communities, and creating a taxation base to fund our local schools, municipalities, and services.

“Today would not have been possible without the many community leaders who have worked for years to see this project move forward. I would like to especially acknowledge the significant contributions of Rep. Will Davis and Sen. Napoleon Harris, who have been champions of this legislation and vital to its success.

“The construction on the airport will create tens of thousands of jobs through its construction and the economic activity spurred by additional cargo and transportation capacity, making this region the best place to live, work and raise a family. I look forward to working closely with IDOT and our state and local leaders to see the successful completion of the South Suburban Airport.”

The bill passed the House in March by a vote of 72 to 40. It was approved by the Senate in May by a vote of 33-20.
