Construction Begins for Solar/Wind Substation

January 1, 1970

Heritage Prairie Renewable (Heritage Prairie) is starting construction of the Essex Substation located outside of the Village of Essex in Kankakee County, Illinois, this month. This development for Heritage Prairie Renewable marks the major construction mobilization for the project. The Essex Substation is a critical component of the project and will ensure that we will be able to deliver the energy generated by Heritage Prairie to the grid and eventually to consumers.

You are likely to notice an uptick in traffic and construction activities around the substation site while construction is taking place over the next 12 months.

Heritage Prairie strives to be a good neighbor in all we do, and that extends to the construction process. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 217-284-6090 or Outreach@HeritagePrairieRenewable.com

About Heritage Prairie

Heritage Prairie is a 600-megawatt (MW) wind energy facility and 300 MW solar energy facility jointly developed by Pattern Energy and Repsol Renewables.   Heritage Prairie will provide enough safe, affordable, and reliable electricity to power the needs of approximately 265,000 American homes every year.

Heritage Prairie Wind is located in western Kankakee County and northeastern Livingston County, and Heritage Prairie Solar is located east of the Village of Essex in Kankakee County.

Heritage Prairie represents a private investment of over $1.75 billion in Kankakee and Livingston Counties. The project is expected to generate over $235 million in new tax revenue to communities in Livingston and Kankakee Counties over the facility’s projected life. This stable, long-term funding will contribute to education, community services, roads, and first responder capabilities. Additionally, the project will support hundreds of jobs during construction and create additional long-term jobs to support operations.
