The Kankakee County Housing Authority provides low-income housing for adults, seniors, and the disabled, Section 8 housing for those meeting HUD guidelines, and family self-sufficiency and homeownership programs.

Although new housing starts have been affected by the recession that started in 2006, in 2013 Kankakee County added 88 new single-family homes from January to October. Prior to 2006, Kankakee County realized 500 to 600 new homes per year. Data shows that since the low of 52 new homes in 2011, figures are steadily rising.
